Television programs, like almost everything, have a shelf life. Even some of the most beloved comedies, dramas and variety programs in the history of television have pulled their welcome while others were smart enough to end his streak on a high note. Programs last-minute interviews night and Saturday Night Live aside, reality TV series tend to fall into the latter category, and often see a decline in ratings for the third season. For some, like CBS's Survivor, it may take a little longer.
But then there's American Idol. 2007 marks the 6th Show season, and if she gets any early indicator scores for future (and usually are), it promises to be the most successful idol.
Idol has deleted from its primetime competition since the beginning of the season. The latest incarnation has an average share of 33% in the coveted 18 to 49 demographic, up several percentage points from the previous year. The season premiere captured an incredible 36% share of viewers, a number not seen since the end of the second season that pitted the soft sentimental song Ruben Studdard robust against the U.S. average of Clay Aiken Pop styles.
What American Idol does for fun is virtually order and gives you the ability to get our attention year after year?
Could we really want to hear from another year of corny, often without a soul, Stevie Wonder covers, or could it be that we like to see much more agony of defeat as opposed to the thrill of victory? It seems a bit of both, since many are able to keep tuning in at least that is what initially attracts us.
Of course, at some point, we started to care. That is what makes American Idol as a success. Watching the contestants make their way through the competition is a bit like watching grow. You want to succeed, and hope against all hope they have what it takes to reach the end of the show, and share the moment with millions nationwide. Like everyone else, take our favorites and usually have a alternate foot or two in case. But however we choose, we become acquainted with them all. The longer they remain in the program, the more we feel like we belong. That's something special that no other reality based television program has been able to successfully double every year.
