The park, which is the count among the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India, is an ideal refuge for wild Asian elephants endangered. Flora:
The Flora in Periyar National Park consists of three types Forests – Tropical evergreen forests, semi evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests. With high diversity and broad rich vegetation. In about 1963 species of flowering plants belonging to 823 genera and 159 families have been identified and recognized by experts in the Forest Research Institute in Kerala and Kerala Forest Department to Periyar National Park.
Wildlife:
Periyar is an ideal habitat for elephants in India. The Other animals to be seen in Kerala Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a tiger. There, now, an estimated 40 tigers in the Periyar National Park. Four primate species found in Periyar – the rare lion tailed macaque, the Nilgiri langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque.
