The devices include low vision glasses, but there are many more products available low vision today that can help patients living with the symptoms macular degeneration. While laser surgery can be used to treat "wet" variety of age-related
the macular degeneration, or AMD, there is no known cure for the "dry" form of this leading cause of blindness. However, low vision devices can help those victims in making the most of what the eye is maintained.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central part of the retina, and therefore the ability to determine the fine details, such as printing, faces, and images. Essentially, one develops a "hole" our vision, if the subject is looking at an object that appears smaller than the hole, "" the object can not be seen clearly. Therefore, the effects of low vision devices is to increase the apparent size of these objects.
Because we use our eyes in different ways in different situations, there is a solution to treat the symptoms of macular degeneration. A patient may require several different products with low vision. Bifocal reading glasses are one of the best known and most common low vision devices, but may not be suitable for all symptoms of macular degeneration.
Bioptic Low-vision goggles, also known as bioptic telescopes are low vision devices that actually consists of miniature telescopes mounted on a pair of regular lenses. These low vision devices can be adjusted for a wide range of activities that require both distance and near vision. While
bioptic glasses for working with low vision in the same way (tilt the head slightly forward), they differ reading glasses bifocal telescopic sight that is not integrated into the primary objective in itself.
Other products for low vision degeneration Age-related macular products such as portable digital magnifier that resembles the "virtual reality" glasses and is used in conjunction with a pair of special glasses. One of the most interesting of low vision products in the market today consists of a miniature television camera that is actually based on the surface of what the patient is reading, amplifies it and sends the electronic image, projecting an image on the inner surface of the lens! This system allows the head the patient to remain upright, it is not necessary to tilt the head.
Of course, such high-vision aids are very high tech expensive at present. However, if the history of other technologies like the PC and the DVD is an indicator, the cost of such devices should fall considerably low vision in the coming years.
