The Bihu is Bohag the most important and largest among the three Bihu Bihus the people of Assam. It begins at the end of the month of Chait and continues until the sixth day of Bohag, the first month of Assamese calendar. The Bihu Bohag Announces New Assamese year. The first day of the Bihu Bohag seen as Goru Bihu 'or the Bihu for the cow.
The second day of the Bihu is the most important day as it is the actual day Bohag Bihu, because it falls on the first day of Bohag and is observed as New Year's Day Assamese. This day is also called the 'Manuh Bihu' or the Bihu for men. In less Assam that day of the Bihu is called "Bar-Domahi.
In the afternoon of the Bihu Bohag the astrologer reached the village, read the 'Bihu Patrika in Namghar and people listen intently. Of course, now this system has almost reached its end.
People are afraid of natural calamities. They want the New Year to be free from all sorts of dangers and difficulties which bring problems and untold suffering for themselves and their pets. One peculiarity of Bohag Bihu is the offering of Bihuwan and use thereof. In Bihu day, people bathe in the morning, wear new clothes and new red tissue lined Gamochas (napkins). The women weave napkins Assam in the month of Chait and New Year's Day to show your friends and family.
That's why they busy themselves in the fabric of clothing and, as such, the sounds of the shuttle looms echo and resonate throughout. They sing Bihu in song__
'Atikai mahura Mugar senehar
Atikai Mako senehar;
Tatokai senehar Bahagar Bihuti
Nepati thak Kenekai?
The song simply means that the muga silk bobbins and shuttles are very dear to Assamese women, but even more expensive is your festival Bohag of Bihu. Professor Jogesh Das gave an interpretation of that fine English Bihu song in his book "Folklore of Assam" in "Fairs and Festivals" as under__
"Very dear to me is the coil Muga
Beloved is the shuttle;
More expensive still is the Bihu of Bohag,
Could do without him?
In summary, the Assamese not discard nor muga silk reels and shuttles, or the Bihu of Bohag always celebrated with much joy and merriments.
The Rongali Bihu is the other name for Bohag Bihu. In the sense of the term, is really the Rong Bihu or joy. Bihu is the joy. That crazy people with the sounds of drums, flutes and other musical instruments. The Gits "Bihu" and "Bongits echo and resonate in the plains and hills of Assam. The Bihu Songs "awaken the softer notes of the hearts of young men and women. "Young people are fickle mind. Their minds are about to fly. Their souls are about to fly. They can not set their minds at any place. In the world of nature also Bihu songs awaken to waves of lust for building in the heart of the birds and animals. The sweetness and the poisoning of Bihu songs also makes fertile soil for crop production.
Another peculiarity Bohag Bihu is the singing of the huncharis or hucharis. Children dressed in their traditional ways of moving from house to house in town to sing huncharis with drums, timpani and Taka; Bihu Bihu dance sing and dance, pick up the gifts and shower blessings in return.
