Home Decorating 101: Relaxing Bathroom

All too often, the bathroom is regarded as simply a room where you shower or bathe, and little thought is given to its appearance and the ways in which it can really be used. What about the bathroom as your own private refuge or sanctuary, a place where you can escape to? What’s better after a hard day’s work than to relax the stress away and rejuvenate your spirits?

It’s difficult to find a room in your home where you can actually escape the rest of the family. Although you sometimes need time to yourself, young children often follow along right on your heels. It’s always important to seek out a little time to unwind. With a little atmosphere, the bathroom can be the perfect place to do this.

Get Rid of That Cold, Sterile Look
Sometimes bathrooms end up looking like, well, no more than just a bathroom. Is it decorated with nothing more than stainless-steel towel racks and toilet-paper holders—the works? There’s nothing fancy; everything is pretty basic and straightforward. If this describes your bathroom, then this is where you need to start.

The first step is to soften the look. This can be done by adding wrought-iron towel racks or white or pastel-colored wood. Lavender, sea foam, or another soft, relaxing shade is perfect for the walls. For the floor, go with carpet or colorful ceramic tiles. Especially if your linoleum is plain-looking and hardly noticeable, consider updating your floors.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Sometimes, a large bathroom mirror can look a little stark. If you have a mirror that’s just hanging there with nothing around it, perhaps it’s time to make a change. If you can, invest in a mirror trimmed with gold edges, or place wallpaper border around the one you have. To create an interesting look, use a border that contrasts with the color of the walls. Or why not change the shape of the mirror completely? For instance, by adding an oval mirror you can create a romantic look.

Decorate the Tub
If you’re lucky enough to have a garden tub or one with wide edges, why not spruce it up? Start by arranging greenery around the edges. You can make the tub look really inviting with small ceramic pots filled with herbs and greenery. With the addition of a few votive candles, you’ll be ready to float your worries away in a tub filled with bubbles and surrounded by the delicious scent of candles. It’s a wonderful experience to light a few candles, fill the tub, and bathe in the warm candlelight glow.

Accents Pull It All Together
If you’re looking for a way to pull your new bathroom together, try adding a few accents. An oblong or square basket to hold a few bath towels makes the perfect touch. If the bathroom is big enough for a small table, you can always add one. Paint it a contrasting color and decorate it by stenciling flowers and greenery around the edges. A few clear glass containers to hold cotton balls and Q-tips will work great as well. If you have any attractive body splash and lotion bottles, you might display them as well. Of course, you can also add more plants and more candles—whatever it takes to make it your own.

Bathing can be much more relaxing when you’re in an exquisitely beautiful room that smells heavenly. Why jump into the tub, only to jump right out again? Instead, you can to relax, unwind, and enjoy yourself. By taking along your favorite book or magazine and a glass of wine, you can make it the most peaceful part of your day! Remember, bathrooms don’t have to be boring.
